Many of us now have jobs that mean that we sit at desks for an extended period of time, often several hours of the day. Sitting at a desk for this amount of time is not good for our bodies and one area that really seems to feel the brunt of it are our legs.
One common complaint that people may have if they spend a long period of time at their desk is that their legs become stiff and sore. However, the issues can go much deeper than this. Some people can find that their circulation is compromised and this can lead to long term issues such as varicose veins.
Thankfully, there are things that you can do to make sure that your legs don’t suffer too much and to help you to feel better from your toes to your hips, we have put together three of the best leg exercises that you can do whilst you are sitting at your desk.
This is an easy exercise for you to do, but it is one that is incredibly effective too. You need to keep one foot flat on the floor, raising the other leg out straight in front of you, so that it is then parallel to the floor. You need to hold this position for 5 seconds, before lowering the leg and repeating with the other one. You need to do this 10 times for each leg.
For those who are used to this exercise and want to make it a little trickier (as well as being more of a workout for you) you could try tracing a circle with your toes, whilst the leg is lifted.
Focused on your calf muscles, this is another great exercise to try out whilst you are at your desk. You will need to make sure that your legs are stretched out in front of you, with your feet just hovering about the ground. Your need to raise your right toes towards your shin, whilst bending your ankle. As you do this your calf muscle will stretch.
At the same time you need to stretch your left toes towards the ground, also giving these muscles a stretch. You should aim to switch this over for around 30 seconds at a steady pace. All to give your calves a good workout.
Your thighs are another great area to try and focus on. However, this particular exercise requires you to take a small ball with you to work, something around the size of a tennis ball. You need to hold this ball between your knee and squeeze for 5 seconds. Relax your legs and then repeat the squeezing motion for at least 10-15 times.
As you can see, just because you are sat at your desk that doesn’t mean that you can’t work on your leg muscles and help with circulation. Of course, the best thing that you can do is to get up and walk around as much as you can as this will help the blood to flow as well as making sure that you take a break from your work too. After all, your brain needs a rest just as much as your legs need to keep moving.
